Starting out on the drums is one of the most exciting things you can do, but it’s also when most bad habits form. I get lots of students where we have to undo bad habits that have held them back for months (sometimes years). Left unchecked, these mistakes slow your progress, frustrate your playing, and make drumming feel harder than it needs to be.
The good news? Once you know what to look out for, you can avoid the traps and progress much faster. Here is a list of Beginner Drummer Mistakes..
1. Beginner Drummer Mistake - Skipping the Warm-Up
Jumping straight in without loosening up your wrists and arms = tension and sloppy playing.
Fix: Spend 5 minutes on singles, doubles, and play a really chilled out song to get yourself ready.
2. Holding the Sticks Too Tight
A death grip leads to tension, poor rebound, and even injuries. The sticks are just extensions of your hands.
Fix: Keep your grip relaxed. Imagine holding a bird, firm enough it won’t fly away, but gentle enough not to hurt it.

3. Forgetting to Count Out Loud
Many beginners prefer to count in their head, but saying the numbers (or any consistent sound, “chit” works too) solidifies consistency and helps you internalise the pulse.
Fix: Count out loud until the groove feels second nature.
4. Ignoring Dynamics
Bashing everything at one volume makes your playing sound flat. Music breathes when you use soft and loud notes.
Fix: Practise the same groove at different volumes. Focus on ghost notes on the snare and lighter hi-hat touches.
More advanced? Imagine a mixer with one lever for each limb. Turn your snare down while keeping everything else steady. Then bring it back up and take your bass drum down. This develops serious control.
5. Skipping the Basics
Jumping straight into flashy fills without mastering singles, doubles, and paradiddles is a dead end.
Fix: Dedicate practice time to rudiments, they’re the building blocks of every groove and fill. It’s good to be keen, but not to be sloppy.
6. Not Learning to Read Music
Lots of drummers try to get by copying YouTube videos. It works for a while, but you’ll hit a wall. Reading music unlocks grooves, fills, and exams.
Fix: Start with basic rhythms, quarter notes, eighth notes, and build from there.
7. Overplaying
Constant fills and cymbal crashes = no groove. Less is more.
Fix: Focus on timekeeping. Lock in with the bass player and let the music breathe.
8. Bad Timing
Even experienced drummers rush fills or drag grooves.
Fix: Use a metronome. Start slow, nail the feel, then speed up.
9. Practising Without Purpose
Sitting at the kit and noodling feels fun but doesn’t build real skill.
Fix: Go into every practice with 2–3 goals. Keep a practice journal to track progress. Record yourself!
10. Comparing Yourself to Others
Scrolling through social media drummers can make you feel behind. Everyone’s journey is different.
Fix: Focus on your progress, not theirs. Improvement happens in small, steady steps.

Mistakes are normal, every drummer makes them. What matters is spotting them early and knowing how to fix them. If you can avoid these 10 traps, your progress will skyrocket.
